Valerie flew into San Francisco and drove down the coast to San Diego.

It's a great trip, down the coast of California with some wonderful places to stay. But do book in advance because in August at least, lots is going on and many folks are flocking there.

The Casa Munras in Monterey was a lovely hotel with very comfortable facilities. And Monterey and Pacific Grove are gorgeous. Plenty of shopping, museums and a fabulous aquarium. Great food, too especially at the Bistro on Lighthouse Ave. Carmel is wonderful but don't go there in August. You can't park when there are big events because the streets are way too narrow and crowded. Try visiting in October instead.

San Luis Obispo is a bit like Greenwich Village was 30 years ago, but without the rest of the city. Lots of great shops and restaurants, parks and cultural events. Very, very charming.

Then there's San Diego. My stay was spent downtown. The weather is just about perfect and the city is friendly, pretty and there's lots to do. My stay at the Bristol was really super. The staff were all very helpful and cheerful. And of course everyone knows about the San Diego Zoo!

All in all it was a great trip.
