Disney World Florida- Off-Site with Car Rental

by Lois Magee
June, 2007

Going to Disney in June is HOT! Humid and hot. Luckily the sunscreen worked.

The Quality Suites Maingate was showing it's age, but the staff were very cordial and helpful.

The hotel is located on Tacky Florida Avenue. Think lots of neon lights, gift shops shaped like giant oranges, every chain restaurant known to the East Coast, and discount theme park ticket scams advertised every twenty feet. Actually, plastic flamingos were not to be seen – they are in far too good of taste for this strip!

The morning night the toilet in the suite didn't shut off while Geoffrey was in the shower. We had a big flood! The maintenance staff tried to dry the room out, but we finally asked to be moved. The front desk agent moved us into a room two doors away.

We gave up on the couch when we changed rooms. The bar across the middle was not adequately buried by the too thin old mattress.

I ate the hotel’s free breakfast the first two mornings; Geoffrey only the first morning. It was a case of very crowded, and the toasters didn’t work very efficiently. I’m not a big breakfast eater, so I didn’t mind, but Geoffrey needed more in the morning. With Waffle House, IHOP, Perkins, Dennies, and Cracker Barrel all along Tacky Florida Avenue, we could be choosey about breakfast.

We used the shuttle to Disney the first day. The problem was that we were ready to crash before the bus was scheduled to return to the hotel. If we hadn’t rented the car, we would have made it work, but the advantage of being able to come and go on our own schedule was too tempting.

The first bus left the hotel at about 7:30 am, the next at 9:55 am, the next at 11:30 am, and the last at 1:45 pm. At least that’s what I think I remember. The bus returned from Disney at 6:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11 pm.

Finding vegetarian food at Disney is a challenge. It’s easiest at Epcot. Impossible at the new Animal Kingdom (it should have been available at the restaurant in the Africa section, but the restaurant closed early). Actually, we didn’t do much at Animal kingdom. It was outrageously crowded, and uncomfortably hot. We left and went to Blizzard Beach instead.

We added a day to our Park Hopper pass for $10 a piece. It actually got us two days – we spent Thursday morning at Disney Quest. (The concession at the hotel wanted to sell us “discount” tickets for over $60 each).
