Puerto Rico - Hyatt Dorado

Off-Season family travel

Anonymous

I traveled to Puerto Rico Dec 11-17, 2005 with my wife and two children, ages 3 and 1. We opted for two beachfront lower connecting rooms and requested a refrigerator in one of the rooms as well as two Pack 'N Plays for the kids. My wife was able to contact the hotel and, through some manipulation, got the Pack 'N Plays. We booked the Caribbean Sale for the first room, and got a family plan rate on the second.

We flew Jet Blue and had a bit of excitement when another plane was on our runway and didn't get out of the way, but we have never have any problems with Jet Blue. To show you how their employees regard the company, we noticed 2 pilots riding as passengers on our flight assist in cleaning the plane after landing.

The Dorado transfer van was not difficult to find at San Juan Airport - we saw the guy as plain as day on arrival - had to wait a little bit for another couple, but it wasn't inconvenient.

As for the Hyatt Dorado, we felt it wasn't geared enough for kids at that time of year. Maybe in peak season it livens up a bit, but basically we were by ourselves without much social interaction with other guests or staff. One drawback was that if you needed a child's meal, you had to go to Cerromar next door on the shuttle, which made stops, etc. There weren't any places to get a snack for the kids during the day - would have been nice to get an ice cream cone or something. The staff was mostly nice - only one guy was nasty.

On the last day, they put the daily activities schedule in our room - don't know exactly what we missed during the week. A car would have been better for us to give us something to do. One morning I went and put towels on the chaise lounges at the beach to hold our spot and when we came out later, they were the only two towels there! The weather and beach were nice and the snorkeling surprisingly good.

The rooms were nice if a bit outdated. We're looking forward to our next trip.
