As for Jamaica, it is a beautiful place and overall we were ok with the resort, we just had a feeling that the native people resented us but still liked our money. Definitely not all, some were excellent. It seemed like the resort was too big and there weren't enough supervisors to assure their program areas were being taken care of professionally. We are usually easy going, but we just expected a little more for our honeymoon. It seemed like at the resort there were a lot of rules that were different then at Royal Caribbean.Lobster dinner, room service etc.
The airplane ride from JFK to Montego Bay was horrible. Air Jamaica sub contracted the flight out to North American Airlines, the plane was older and smelled like urine. When you went to the bathroom the cupboard door under the sink wouldn't close and kept swinging open and hitting you in the knees. The seats were cracked and there was little to no room to move around or even sit in them.
Once we got to the airport we were greeted and had a cocktail, very nice service from the Sandals employees. The bus ride was pleasant - long, but what can you do?
Once we got to Sandals Grande Ocho Rios Resort they unloaded all of our luggage at the manor and then they asked us to sit down. Once they saw we were signature guests they asked us to come into another room. This room was dirty there were chairs all over not pushed in, still used cups on the table and half eaten sandwiches. They said help our selves to a drink but there were no glasses. We had asked for an upgrade and the lady said we don't have room to upgrade you but that we would have a fully stocked bar the whole time. They handed us our green bag with sunscreen and other incidentals once again back on to the bus, just what we didn't want to see for at least a week. We then got dropped off at the ocean side and went up to our room. We checked out the accommodations, clean room etc.
About the open bar, this was very disappointing. Juice, soda and a bottle of vodka, I guess our expectations were a little high when we here fully stocked bar in the US that means at least some beer or some other types of alcohol. This in place of a room upgrade hardly comparable.
We called for room service and they said they don't offer room service, that was surprising to us when we had it at the last resort another disappointment, one perk we really enjoyed.
Housekeeping was another frustrating issue, there were too many inconsistencies on when the service would take place. One time they would clean at 11 then the next day 12 and then 2. Also the turning down of the bed, they came at 6:00 one night and then at 9:00 on another.
The resort seemed to spread out and the playmakers never came around to get you involved in any of the activities like they did on our first visit to Sandals. Also the staff seemed like we would be bothering them when we asked them a question or they would give you a look like boy that was a stupid question by the way they answered back. At the other resort they were trying everything they could to make our experience the best, and they did. When we requested a lobster dinner at Royal they made arrangements for that to happen, when we asked for a special lobster dinner for our honeymoon at Grande they looked like we were asking for a million dollars.
I guess the biggest thing is that we had such a great experience at Royal Caribbean the first time we went to Sandals, that we expected the same this time and even a little more that it was our honeymoon. As of right now I don't think we will be attending a Sandals again and when people ask us about our honeymoon we tell them the type of experience we had and wouldn't recommend it to others.
I am also in the service industry and I know how customer service should be done. A number of your employees need work on their customer service skills or they need to hide their feelings a little better from their guests.
